New Superintendent for Baltimore County Schools

Dr. S. Dallas Dance is the next Superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. Dr. Dance will leave his job as Chief Middle Schools Officer in Houston, to replace Dr. Joe Hairston who is retiring.

He will serve a four-year term effective July 1, 2012. Dr. Dance has a two-and-a-half-year-old son, and says “I am thrilled, honored, and humbled to be joining such an outstanding school system.”

2 Baltimore attorneys sue Facebook

Two Baltimore law firms have filed a lawsuit against Facebook, arguing that the site has violated privacy laws. The Daily Record of Baltimore (http://bit.ly/xicCpO) reports the law offices of William Murphy Jr. and Peter Angelos filed their lawsuit in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif.

The lawsuit, which also involves a California firm, claims Facebook has used online tracking technology to monitor users even when they are not on Facebook’s site. The two named plaintiffs in the case are Laura Maguire of Charlotte, N.C., and Baltimore resident Christopher Simon.

Baltimore panel OKs new Grand Prix contract

A city spending panel controlled by the mayor has approved a five-year contract with a new promoter for the Baltimore Grand Prix. The city’s Board of Estimates voted 3-2 Wednesday to approve a contract with Downforce Racing LLC. Comptroller Joan Pratt and City Council President Bernard “Jack” Young voted against the contract, but the mayor and her two appointees voted in favor.

A study found that the inaugural Grand Prix generated a $47 million economic impact, but the city terminated its contract with Baltimore Racing Development after the group failed to pay $1.5 million owed to the city.

Longtime Baltimore budget czar to retire
