Cardinal-Designate O’Brien back in Baltimore

Today Cardinal-Designate Edwin O’Brien made his first public appearance since returning from Rome, and his appointment to the College of Cardinals. He talked about a trip he’s taking to Haiti, and about his replacement.
He says his replacement in Baltimore has not been named yet, but he believes someone will be named in the next two or three weeks. In addition to his future plans, Cardinal-Designate O’Brien also addressed the same-sex marriage legislation Governor O’Malley is hoping to get passed during the current session.
Baltimore County Biggest Teacher Pension Loser

Baltimore County would be the biggest loser when it comes to the shifting of teacher pension costs to the state’s 24 local jurisdictions under a budget proposal introduced today by Gov. Martin O’Malley.
O’Malley’s proposed fiscal year 2013 budget includes shifting $240 million in teacher pension costs to local governments. After accounting for more than $244 million in so-called offsets that O’Malley said would soften the blow, Baltimore County would still have to cover about $1.8 million in costs as a result, according to a Maryland Department of Budget and Management document released at the request of Patch.

Baltimore County Sees Jump In Murders

The number of murders in Baltimore County for the year just ended is up. By 50 percent. Police department spokeswoman Elise Armacost tells WBAL News there were thirty homicides in all compared with 20 homicides the year before.

“Baltimore County is a very safe county,” Armacost said. The 30 murders happened in an area with a population of over 800,000, she said.

Man, 31, shot and killed inside home

A 31-year-old man was shot and killed during a robbery Wednesday night inside his home in North Baltimore, according to city police.
Police said that just before 10 p.m., two armed men entered a home in the 2800 block of W. Garrison Ave. and demanded money from the victim and a second person. After assaulting the victim, the suspects began looking through the home, police said. When the victim began to fight back, he was shot in the face.
Baltimore Co. police officer hurt in crash
